Make Someones Day

Remember when someone did you a favour or an act of kindness, however small and how that felt to you. What happened - and what was it that made you feel just a bit special?

Was it today, or was it yesterday? Chances are that it was quite recently.

How would it be if you were able to shine a little light into the life of many others that you meet and make their day, today. How would you feel about it and, more to the point, how would they?

And what are these things that you can do?

Well, I remember well when I worked in retailing. Those guys work their socks off – it is hard work on your feet and dealing with demanding customers or clients all day. Now, although some customers feel frustrated when things go wrong and show it, just once in a while there is a real darling who makes you feel great. I can tell you, it brightens up your whole day and, hey, surprise, surprise, you feel and act better with your next customers.

Other things? Well, how about trying to smile at someone you don’t know or say ‘good morning’ to a passer-by when you’re on your morning walk or jog. What about saying ‘thanks’ to the bus driver, the paperboy or the postman. And at the gym or at work, what about a little compliment about what someone is wearing or a piece of work they have done. It can even be as simple as acknowledging and valuing someone by listening really carefully to them and showing a real interest about what they are telling you - avoiding coming back at them with your agenda. It’s even better if it’s quite unexpected or even anonymous. The opportunities are endless.

How many times have you let someone out into your queue/line of traffic and then seen them do the same thing at the next junction. See. This goodwill spreads! For me the power of making someone’s day is about the down-line. You make 5 peoples’ day and those then, quite naturally, and without thinking, they make the day of five others – Wow! As soon as you know it, there is just the chance that your actions can be making the day of hundreds upon hundreds of others. It’s like a goodwill MLM!

As coaches, we focus on doing what is just great for our clients. We can also get a great personal spin off (and with wry smile on our faces!), if in our daily life we just do one little thing for some of the many people we just come across – who knows what effect that will have on those people and hence the hundreds of people we affect through a little thoughtful act or deed.

Whose day can you make today? It costs you nothing, makes you feel great and makes others feel great. A true Win-Win.

It’s a wonderful world!
